makes 8 to 10 servings

1 cup sifted regular flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup dry cocoa (not cocoa mix)
1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
3/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 3/4 cups hot water

Sift flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of the cocoa, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl. Stir in milk, melted butter or margarine, and vanilla until smooth; stir in walnuts.

Spread evenly in a baking pan, 8x8x2.

Mix brown sugar and remaining cocoa; sprinkle over batter. Pour hot water evenly over all.

Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 40 minutes, or until top springs back when lightly pressed with fingertip. Serve warm with whipped cream.
